Animation News Round-Up: Week of Jan. 9, 2022

I’m going to try and do some news round-ups every week or so – I have a feeling this year is going to be a big one for the industry. I want to keep you updated. So let’s take a look at the past few days.

Titmouse Unionizes

I talked last week about how The Animation Guild is looking to improve conditions for workers in the industry. Their current victory? Getting 113 members of the animation studio Titmouse New York (over 90% of the staff), to join them – this event marks the first time that TAG has gotten members outside the L.A. area.

Titmouse’s New York will first focus on “defining job roles and classifying workers accurately, addressing unrealistic schedules, paying overtime appropriately, improving health benefits, and establishing wage minimums to ensure a livable salary,” according to the union.”

Avatar Studios looking for character designers

I’m still unsure about the concept of Avatar Studios as a whole, but if I had the opportunity to write for the studio and be a part of Avatar: The Last Airbender history I would take it in a heartbeat.

I’m sure there’s a lot of character designers who got their start making fan art and OCs for the series. So this is a huge moment for them.

Bob’s Burgers Movie Trailer Drops

After two years of delays, we finally a release date, synopsis and trailer for the Bob’s Burgers film. The movie will focus on the family dealing with a sinkhole, causing their business to close; meanwhile, the kids stumble on a mystery that may hold the key to saving the restaurant.

It will be released on May 27.

Turning Red Goes Straight to Streaming

It was recently announced that Pixar’s latest film, Turning Red, will go straight to streaming on March 11. It will be available on Disney+ for no extra fee. The movie shares the fate of the most recent Pixar films, which were also pulled from their theatrical runs due to the COVID pandemic.

While plenty of people are upset, some are suspicious as Walt Disney Animation films like Raya and the Last Dragon and Encanto have gotten theatrical releases.

Totally Spies Revival?

We all watched this show when we were little – and grew up to realize that it was just a machine for the writers’ various fetishes. But, I still enjoyed it. It was always fun, cheesy, and unafraid to be girly. And it was announced, the other day, that the show would be getting a new season.

No other details have been revealed…but count me in. I want to see how they make this show work in 2022. Whether it’s a revival or reboot has yet to be announced.

Scott Pilgrim is Getting an Anime?

You know the graphic novel turned cult movie featuring Michael Cera, right? Well, this week it was announced that the franchise would be getting an anime series on Netflix. I assume they mean anime because of the style since it isn’t being produced in Japan but either way, I think it could be cool.

As long as they keep the art style the same as the graphic novels of course since that will be the main draw.
